Premenopausal Symptoms

premenopausal symptoms

Premenopausal symptoms, also known as Perimenopausal symptoms, begin to show themselves in the early stages of menopause, a biological stage in a woman’s life when the ovaries permanently cease to function. This means an end to the ovary’s release of ova or egg cells, the monthly thickening of the uterus lining and its eventual shedding, (the menstrual period) unless  pregnant. It usually occurs when a woman reaches around 40-50 years old but there have been reported cases where the symptoms occur sooner. This phenomenon signals the end of a woman’s fertility.

What are Some Premenopausal Symptoms?

There are no hard and fixed lists of premenopausal symptoms. Different women are bound to have different experiences. There is however, a common list of symptoms that recur from one female to another.

Irregular period

This is only applicable to women who have always had regular menstruation cycles. Females who may show premenopausal symptoms may experience irregular menses, either earlier or later than usual.

Mood swings

This is a common symptom that manifests itself through exaggerated reactions. A woman may be violently angry one moment and then hysterically laughing the next.

Hot flashes

Hot flashes are one symptom where a woman’s core temperature changes without warning. She may find the weather unbearably hot on a humid afternoon or extremely warm despite a fully functional air conditioner.

Premenopausal Symptoms Treatment

Strictly speaking, premenopausal symptoms are nothing more than hormonal- estrogen, progesterone and testosterone – imbalances that are easy to seek treatment for. Treatments may come in the form of the doctor – prescribed hormone replacement therapy, (HRT) or, the less famous, alternative medicine.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) involves taking hormone replacements orally. Hormones – in – a – pill, such as the estrogen – progestin combination are prescribed by medical professionals over a specific period of time. Studies show however, that women with higher estrogen rates may be more prone to heart diseases, blood clots and even breast cancer. Despite a few risks involved though, this method is by far the most effective treatment for premenopausal symptoms.

Alternative methods are also known to work. These methods refer to radical lifestyle changes, acupuncture and even herbal remedies. Herbal remedies are often preferred more than the others because it is relatively affordable and easy to come by. There are some who claim that herbs can naturally stimulate the glands to release the hormones rather than replace them. Others maintain that herbal remedies nourish the hormonal glands.

Radical lifestyle changes have also been recommended to help overcome and treat perimenopause. By ingesting estrogen rich food such as yams, apples and cherries, embarking on a regular fitness program and choosing a stress free life – women can easily go back to a life of normalcy, perimenopause or otherwise.

perimenopausal symptoms

perimenopausal symptoms

Perimenopausal symptoms usually start to manifest when a woman reaches her 50s. There are cases however when these symptoms begin to show earlier. This is why it is important to know what to expect to thus be able to seek medical attention or address the concern at the onset.

Perimenopausal Symptoms

Hot flashes are uncontrollable and sudden increase of body temperature the causes of which are still unknown but a common and accepted theory is that it is a result of a decrease of estrogen circulation.

Night sweats are believed to be extreme hot flashes that occur during sleep, drenching clothes and bed, consequentially.

Weight Gain – During perimenopause, the body’s metabolism slows down and attempts at previously effective exercises prove futile. This then boils down to unwanted weight gain.

Mood swings pertain to the swift change of emotions during perimenopause and is most common of perimenopausal symptoms. This is characterized by a roller coaster ride of emotions, majority of which are exaggerated reactions.

Irregular Menses – Another sure sign of perimenopausal symptoms is irregular menses.  This is not the most reliable basis of a perimenopause stage however since not all women have regular periods.

Insomia is also considered notorious of perimenopausal symptoms. However, the causes of this disorder are so vast that having this one symptom alone will not constitute to being at a perimenopause stage.

Serious Perimenopausal Symptoms

Heart Palpitations – This is another common perimenopausal symptom. Again however, since there are numerous things that cause heart palpitations, this symptom also does not determine whether a woman is perimenopausal.

Hypothyroidism – is a result of hormonal imbalances. It must not however, be confused with Perimenopausal symptoms. These are two different manifestations that are caused by hormonal imbalances. Perimenopause simply means lacking estrogen while hypothyroidism is the result of insufficient thyroid release.
